Shamrock Rovers have beaten Bohemian FC 1-0 in the Dublin derby.
Graham Burke headed home the winner as the Hoops beat their bitter rivals in front of a record 7,021 crowd at Tallaght Stadium.
Bohs had won seven of the last eight gamed against Rovers, but Burke’s decisive goal proved to be the difference.
His 27th-minute header gave Rovers the lead, and Stephen Bradley’s men held on for a crucial victory.
The Republic of Ireland international headed home the lively Sean Kavanagh’s cross to give the hosts the lead, and Burke also made two crucial clearances off his own line.
The talented Dubliner first denied Darragh Leahy, before preventing Rob Cornwall from drawing Bohs level seconds later.
Unlike recent derbies, there were no red cards in this encounter.
Danny Grant headed over as Bohs pushed for an equalizer, with Darragh Leahy blazing a shot over the bar early in the second half.
Jack Byrne – called up to Mick McCarthy’s Ireland squad this week – wasn’t at his flowing best for the Tallaght club.
The wind certainly played a factor in the heated derby, but Bohs rarely looked like finding a way back into the game.
The Gypsies entered the derby on a 10-game unbeaten run against Rovers,
“You have to mention the crowd,” Shamrock Rovers manager Stephen Bradley said afterwards.
“Over 7,000. It’s unbelievable. We asked them to come out in their numbers and they did.”
Despite the win, Rovers remain four points off league leaders Dundalk, having played two more games than the Lilywhites.
