The first Home Nations rugby tournament was contested in 1882.

England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales took part in the four-team tournament.

In 1910, the competition evolved into the Five Nations, with France joining the four aforementioned countries in the new format.

90 years later, the inclusion of Italy at the turn of the millennium saw the inception of the modern Six Nations.

Through all its formats, the European rugby competition has been held 120 times, excluding the ongoing – and currently suspended – 2020 season.
