Carl Frampton says it would be brilliant to become Ireland's first three-weight world champion before Katie Taylor accomplishes the feat.
'The Jackal' has agreed terms to face WBO world super-featherweight champion Jamel Herring once the restrictions on boxing caused by the coronavirus crisis are lifted, with the fight originally slated for June 13th.
Frampton (27-2) outclassed American Tyler McCreary in Las Vegas in his last fight in November, and the Belfast boxer (27-2) then underwent hand surgery the following month.
"When I turned professional my dream was to become a world champion," Frampton told RTÉ's Sunday Sport.
"But to become a three-weight world champion, and the first ever on the island of Ireland, is going to be huge. There's three two-weight world champions; myself, Katie Taylor and Steve Collins. To stand alone as a three-weight champion would be huge.
"I do believe Katie Taylor will become a three-weight world champion at some point in her career. To get in there in front of her would be brilliant."
The 33-year-old says he feels like he is in his prime, and claims he is confident that the fight will be officially announced once restrictions are lifted.
Frampton also revealed that the delays caused by the coronavirus pandemic are likely to scupper plans to stage his world title challenge against 34-year-old Herring (21-2) at Windsor Park in the summer.
With the fight now likely to take place later in the year, weather conditions in Belfast may not allow for an outdoor venue.
Fellow Belfast fighter Michael Conlan was also hoping to box on home soil in the summer, but both men may now have to move their respective bouts across the Atlantic.
Frampton has another iconic venue in mind, should Windsor Park be unavailable, and the former two-weight world champion confirmed he does not want to stage the fight at Belfast's Odyssey Arena.
"I think that's (Windsor Park) probably ruled out now," he said.
"Weather conditions in Northern Ireland are not great. I think if it goes any later than the beginning of September it probably rules an outdoor stadium out. If we don't do Windsor Park then why would Jamel Herring want to come to the Odyssey as the champion to fight me in an indoor arena when he can just do that in New York?
"Madison Square Garden has been mentioned. That would be a dream for me. I've boxed in some big arenas around the world but not Madison Square Garden."
Irish boxer Jono Carroll has backed Frampton to overcome the challenge of Herring.
“(Herring) is alright but Carl should beat him,” 'King Kong' explained, in quotes reported by IrishBoxing.com.
“He’s not that fast. He is lazy but then he loads up sometimes and looks like he holds a bit of power. I know people who spar him and stuff and they said he is just upper body big. His legs are skinny as anything and he hasn’t got that much power. They think Carl should beat him also.”
