Euro 2020 | Ramsey on target as Wales beat Turkey 2-0 in Group A

Wales have beaten Turkey 2-0 in Baku to keep their hopes of progressing to the knockout stages of Euro 2020 alive.

Aaron Ramsey and Connor Roberts were on target for Wales in the Group A clash in Azerbaijan, while Gareth Bale missed a penalty for Robert Page's side.

Wales are now second in Group A on four points, two behind Italy (who have already qualified for the knockout stages) and one ahead of Switzerland with one group match remaining.

Ben Davies headed wide from an early free kick as Wales looked for an early goal against Şenol Güneş' side.

Ramsey then had a huge chance to open the scoring in the seventh minute, but his effort from a tight angle was saved by the legs of Ugurcan Cakir after Bale had played in the Juventus midfielder.

Five minutes later, Kieffer Moore headed over from Dan James' cross as Wales continued to press.

Wales had Joe Morrell to thank twice, with the Luton Town midfielder making two goal-line clearances following Turkish corners.

Page's men broke the deadlock in the 42nd minute with an excellent goal.

Bale played an exquisite ball from deep into the path of Ramsey, who had beaten the offside trap to get in behind Turkey's defence.

Ramsey controlled the ball on his chest before side-footing a volley past Cakir to make it 1-0 to Wales at half time.

Hakan Çalhanoğlu tested Danny Ward with a low drive from distance early in the second half, with Bale sending a looping volley over the crossbar at the other end.

Ramsey could have added a second in the 58th minute, but his deflected shot on the turn was parried by Cakir after a good run into the box by Roberts.

Wales were then awarded a penalty on the hour mark, with Turkey defender Mehmet Zeki Çelik clumsily tripping Bale just inside the box.

The Welsh captain, 31, blazed his penalty well over the crossbar.

A relieved Turkey went in search of an equaliser, with Burak Yilmaz heading straight at Ward in the 71st minute.

Bale nearly atoned for his penalty miss with a header in the 79th minute, but Cakir got down to hold the Real Madrid attacker's downward effort after a good cross from Ramsey.

Ward then made an excellent save to deny Umut Meraş' goal-bound header in the 87th minute.

Bale almost created a goal out of nothing in the 94th minute, dancing into the box and stinging Cakir's palms with a well-hit shot.

Moore's volley from the rebound deflected behind for a corner.

Wales worked it short to Bale, who dribbled into the box far too easily before cutting the ball back to Roberts, who side-footed it home from eight yards to seal an impressive win for the Welsh.
