Football | Carla Ward named Ireland women's manager

The FAI has confirmed the appointment of Carla Ward as the Republic of Ireland women's head coach.

Ward was most recently part of Emma Hayes' background team for the United States women's Olympics team, who won gold at the 2024 Olympic Games.

Ward, 41, previously managed Aston Villa for three seasons, and also had spells in charge of Sheffield United and Birmingham City. Her playing career saw her represent Bristol City, Bristol Rovers, Leeds, Lincoln Ladies, Sheffield FC and Sheffield United.

The England native replaces Eileen Gleeson, who was not offered a new contract after the Girls in Green's failure to qualify for Euro 2025.

"I'm hugely excited to get going with the Ireland women’s national team," Ward said.

"This is an unbelievable opportunity, not just with the national team but in helping to add to the fantastic work being done to develop women's and girls’ football."

Alan Mahon has been confirmed as her assistant coach, while Ireland legend Emma Byrne will continue as goalkeeping coach.

Ward's first fixture in the dugout will be a UEFA Nations League match against Turkey at Tallaght Stadium on February 21st.
