GAA | Shane O'Neill confirmed as Galway hurling boss

Shane O'Neill has been appointed as the new Galway hurling manager on a two-year deal.

O'Neill replaces Micheál Donoghue, who stepped down in August after a hugely successful spell with the Tribesmen.

Donoghue ended Galway's All-Ireland drought by leading the county to Liam MacCarthy glory in 2017 - and another final in 2018 - but has resigned following Galway's failure to get through the Leinster round-robin this year.

The Tribesmen's search for a new manager has been a lengthy one, with Galway the last top-tier team to announce their manager ahead of their 2020 campaign.

According to reports, O'Neill emerged as the leading candidates following the interview stages.

O'Neill rose to prominence at Limerick club Na Piarsaigh, where he won an All-Ireland title, two Munster titles and two county titles with the club.

"Galway GAA are delighted to announce the appointment of Shane O’Neill as Manager of the Galway Senior Hurling team for 2020 & 2021," an official statement read.

"The management team is being finalised. On behalf of all associated with Galway GAA, we would like to wish Shane and all involved every success."
